The city of Pompeii itself contains two very distant worlds: on the one hand what is left of one of the richest cities of the Roman Empire and on the other the Christian spirituality, as witnessed by many pilgrims visiting the famous sanctuary dedicated to the Beata Vergine of the Pompeii rosary, a tangible sign of devotion to the Virgin Mary.

The Pagan and Christian world coexist less than 800 meters away from each other, close in space, far in principles and aspirations, consequential in time.

Pompeii is known around the world for the tragedy struck in 79 AD, when the rich Roman city was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, together with Stabiae, Oplontis and Herculaneum. A terrible tragedy which, however, was found intact after nearly two thousand years, a historical live proof, a glimpse of everyday life in the greatest empire of history.

The city brought numerous examples of public buildings (the Hole with the Capitolium, the Basilica, administrative buildings, buildings dedicated to the imperial cult, the macellum, the baths, the theater district and the amphitheater) and private buildings (House of the Faun, House of the Tragic Poet, House of Menander, House of the Chaste Lovers,Villa of Mysteries) that contribute to the well-defined physiognomy of this ancient city, in all artistic aspects as well as those related to everyday life.
